18 Years for Mahesh Babu’s ‘Okkadu’: Namrata calls her all-time favourite film an ‘eternal classic’

Released in 2003 on this very day (January 15), ‘Okkadu’ catapulted the stardom of Mahesh Babu to a whole new level in Telugu cinema and turned him into a hot favourite among the masses. Directed by Gunasekhar and bankrolled by MS Raju, the action drama starred Bhumika Chawla as the leading lady with Prakash Raj essaying the antagonist’s role of Obul Reddy. The film follows the journey of a Kabaddi player who saves a girl from a dreadful factionist in Kurnool and hides her in Hyderabad. While the villain pursues them with all forces, the protagonist refuses to back down from a confrontation with him.

As the high-octane actioner completed 18 years of release, Mahesh’s wife Namrata Shirodkar took to Instagram and called the film an ‘eternal classic’. Mentioning Okkadu as her all-time favourite film, she wrote “An eternal classic from the plate of @urstrulymahesh’s films!! A film you can watch over and over again!! My all-time favourite 😍😍❤️ and it can only get better with time 🤗 #18YearsOfOkkadu”

‘Okkadu’ released to a rousing reception from the Telugu audience and shattered all the existing records in Tollywood. It has garnered eight Nandi Awards and four Filmfare Awards South. Director Gunasekhar chose the Old City of Hyderabad and Charminar monument as the film’s backdrop and even erected a replica set of the latter to shoot the film. Till date, the film is considered as cult classic when it comes to commercial cinema.

On the work front, Mahesh Babu is prepping up for the shooting of ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’ which will kick-off in January. Starring ‘Mahanati’ fame Keerthy Suresh is playing the leading lady, the plot of the film reportedly revolves around financial frauds in the banking sector.
