Badhaai Ho director and actor come together to help Surekha Sikri

National Award winning television and Bollywood actress Surekha Sikri suffered a brain stroke on Tuesday morning and has been admitted to a local hospital in Mumbai. The 75 year-old Balika Vadhu and Badhaai Ho actress suffered the stroke at 11am and was rushed to the hospital by her nurse. “I rushed her to the hospital and she is currently being treated,” the nurse told Mumbai Mirror. This is the second time Sikri has suffered a stroke. She had suffered one in 2018, soon after Badhaai Ho released, and she had not been able to resume work for nearly a year.

Sikri faced financial curse more so because of the lockdown where most actors were out of work with no new movies or serials being shot. Also, even after the lockdown was lifted, seniors actors initially were not allowed to shoot. Sikri had, earlier this year expressed concern over the government not allowing senior artists to work for fear of contracting the Coronavirus. The senior actress had said in an interview that she needed to work to pay for her mounting medical bills. “It is a rotten rule, a very unfair rule because it violates my right to work to the best of my ability and earn a living for my family,” she was quoted as saying.

The nurse tending to her told Mirror that Sikri could not be admitted in a bigger hospital due to financial constraints. “I couldn’t get her admitted to any other hospital because of high fees. We do not have that kind of money,” the nurse was quoted as saying.

On hearing about her hospitalisation today, Sikri’s costars and directors have come forth to help the veteran actress. Speaking to us her Badhaai Ho costar Gajraj Rao, who played her son in the film, expressing his concern for the actress said, “Both Amit Sharma, the Badhaai Ho director, and I are in touch with Surekha ji’s secretary Vivek and yes, we are all there with her and we’ll extend all help we can, to her.”

Director Amit Sharma, who worked with the actress in Badhaai Ho, says that he spoke to Surekha’s family, manager and nurse after she was admitted to the hospital. “I am in Goa, but I have been in touch with her family. She is in ICU and is under observation. She was admitted to Citicare Hospital after she suffered a brain stroke on Tuesday,” says Amit, adding that he has ensured that he would do his best with whatever financial help would be needed in the actress’ treatment. “I have not spoken to anyone else, but people who are close to her- her family, nurse and manager. I will be doing my best to provide any kind of help that would be needed and I don’t think there would be any financial obstacles in her treatment,” adds the director.

In an interview in July, Surekha Sikri had rubbished rumours of asking for financial help. She was quoted as saying that she needed work to help her pay her bills.

Sureka Sikri is one of the few actresses to have won multiple National Awards for her acting. She is known for her roles in films like Sardari Begum, Raincoat and Zubeidaa, to name a few apart from TV shows like Banegi Apni Baat, Sanjah Chulha, Ek Tha Raja, Ek Thi Rani, among others.
