Last year, popular Bollywood filmmakers Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Bhushan Kumar have announced a film on the 2019 Balakot airstrike. Written and to be directed by ‘Rock On!’ fame Abhishek Kapoor, the real-life inspired drama will showcase the achievements of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the airstrike in Balakot where the country’s fighter jets launched smart bombs that targeted Jaish-e-Mohammad’s largest terror facility in Pakistan. Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was taken prisoner by the Pakistani forces during this operation and later released.
If the on-going speculations are anything to go by, Abhishek Kapoor is reportedly in talks with Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda to play the role of Abhinandan in the untitled project. According to a report in an entertainment portal, the film will reportedly trace the Pulwama attack, the following airstrike, Abhinandan’s captivity and his return to India. It added that Vijay has expressed his interest to feature in the film but is yet to sign the dotted line.
While the ‘Arjun Reddy’ actor’s current project ‘Fighter’ is being helmed as a Hindi-Telugu bilingual, Abhishek Kapoor’s directorial might be his first straight Bollywood film if the news turns out to be true. At present, the ‘Kedarnath’ maker is occupied with Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor’s film.
Coming to Vijay Deverakonda’s pan-Indian project ‘Fighter’, the shooting is expected to resume shortly. Starring bombshell Ananya Panday as the leading lady, the Hindi version of the actioner is presented by Karan Johar through his Dharma Productions. Starring Ramya Krishnan and Ronit Roy in pivotal roles, the first schedule of the multilingual film got wrapped up in Mumbai before the lockdown. Vijay has taken basic Mixed Martial Arts training for his role.
