Despite losing motivation I kept pushing myself for Fighter: Vijay Deverakonda

Vijay Deverakonda’s next film with Puri Jagannadh, tentatively titled Fighter is making news for all the right reasons.

The actor who’s usually known for playing unique characters in off-beat films is trying out a true-blue commercial film for the first time in his career, something that is a far cry from Bobby of Dear Comrade or even Gautham of World Famous Lover. The pan-Indian film demands him not just to show off a different set of skills but to also sweat it out and train hard, says the actor.

“Whether it is six or eight packs, I have to look like a fighter who can beat the sh*t out of someone. And in order to do that, I need to give it my all,” says Deverakonda about his character, adding, “I have been concentrating on my fitness even during the lockdown and working out regularly for the last eight months to maintain my physique. In between, I have to admit that I did lose motivation, but I kept pushing myself to work out non-stop.”

Fighter might be Deverakonda’s first commercial film but he reinstates that it will still be ‘(his) kind of film’. “This will not be the usual commercial entertainers we all watched growing up, this will still be well within my zone. When I heard the script, it was an immediate yes because I wanted to do something like this for my next. Puri is truly one of my favourite directors and Pokiri is my favourite film of his,” he adds. Ananya Panday will make her debut in Telugu cinema with this film that is being produced by Charmme Kaur and Karan Johar.

Shooting for the film was in progress in Mumbai when the pandemic hit, putting a halt. Pictures and videos leaked from sets saw Vijay Deverakonda in his long-haired new avatar with Ananya on a bike. Sources state that the film will resume shooting from November with the principal cast. But for now, the star is busy enjoying some personal time in Europe. Further details are awaited.
