When the iconic and landmark RK Studios – that was ravaged in a massive fire – was sold to realty major Godrej Properties Ltd sometime ago, the general feeling was that the revival of RK banner was still a long way off. After all, buzz about Randhir Kapoor and his younger brothers Rishi and Rajeev getting into helming the family”s business of making films had been doing the rounds since 2010 but nothing concrete had materialised. Buzz gained ground in 2012 when it was also being said that Sriram Raghavan will direct the (re)opening film of the banner and Ranbir would star in it, but this too did not see light. It now seems that the stage has been set.
In a recent and exclusive chat with ETimes, Randhir Kapoor, when asked about this, sprung a surprise, “Well, it’s happening. We are reviving the RK banner now. The film will be a love story.” And will he direct it himself? “Yes,” said Raj Kapoor’s eldest son.
Randhir however politely declined when asked to reveal the cast. He simply said that he would reserve that for another time, but clearly sounded that he had his actors in mind who would fill the frames of his new directorial.
Famous for several films- like Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai (1960), Mera Naam Joker (1970), Bobby (1973), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Prem Rog (1982) and Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985) to name a few, RK Films frankly needs no introduction. After Raj Kapoor passed away in 1988, Randhir Kapoor completed the unfinished Henna, Rajiv Kapoor directed Prem Granth (1996) and Rishi Kapoor directed Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999). After that, Raj Kapoor’s family produced no film till date. A break of 21 years from filmmaking is a very long time and this is surely good news for Bollywood.
