Veteran playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on Friday at a Chennai hospital. Balasubramaniam, popularly known as SPB, was admitted to MGM Healthcare on August 5 for Covid-19, and had been on life support due to his extremely critical condition in the last few days.
Roja actress Madhoo Shah, who played the lead, recalled her memories with the singer, who had sung the most memorable songs of her film. She said, “He not only sang for my film ‘Roja’ but he also sang many songs for the films I did in the South film industry. But, if you ask me now, when I think of SPB, the first song that comes to the mind is ‘Aate Jaate’ from Salman Khan film ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’. He was the voice of Salman Khan in Bollywood. Whenever you close your eyes, ‘Aate Jaate’ his most popular song from ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ comes to the mind. I have deep respect and deeply mourn his loss. His passing away is a big loss to the country. May God rest his soul in peace and condolences to the entire family.”
In the Hindi soundtrack, he sang two duets – ‘Yeh Haseen Waadiyan’ and a version of ‘Roja Jaaneman’ (the second version was sung by Hariharan). SPB sang three songs in the Tamil soundtrack of ‘Roja’ – ‘Rukkumani Rukkumani’, and the duet and solo versions of ‘Kaadhal Rojave’. The music was composed by AR Rahman.
AR Rahman, who composed the music for ‘Roja’ posted a video on Twitter and captioned it as Celebration SP Balasubramanyam’s music, life and personality and in the video he said: He will learn a song in 15 minutes, sing it in 10 minutes and go for the next recording. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a singer like that. So quick, so professional, so humble,” A R Rahman added.
