Surprising the trade pundits in the Telugu states, Vaishnav Tej and Krithi Shetty’s debut film “Uppena” emerged as the maiden blockbuster of the year. Written and directed by Buchi Babu Sana, the romantic-drama featuring Vijay Sethupathi in a prominent role has notched up a worldwide gross of over Rs 70 crore in the first week. The film is on a record-smashing spree and despite competition from new releases like Allari Naresh’s Naandhi, the romantic drama is still managing to hold its ground.
After heaping praise from Balakrishna and Chiranjeevi, Uppena has got a big gift from Superstar Mahesh Babu. The 45-year-old who watched the film recently was spellbound by the performances of the lead actors and the engaging narration by the debutant director. Terming it as a timeless classic, Mahesh wrote on his Twitter handle “#Uppena... One word… CLASSIC! @BuchiBabuSana you’ve made one of those rare timeless films… Proud of you! It’s really heartwarming when you see two newcomers come up with stellar performances…. #VaisshnavTej and @IamKrithiShetty … you guys are stars!”
Set against the backdrop of a fishing hamlet named Uppada, ‘Uppena’ is backed by appreciable performances from the lead actors, mesmerising music by Devi Sri Prasad and the riveting narration which discusses toxic masculinity. Though the plot of the film is a tried and tested formula of poor boy falling for a rich girl, Buchi Babu brought enough inventiveness by roping in Vijay Sethupathi to keep the proceedings fresh and engaging. While Vaishnav Tej bags decent marks for his portrayal of Aasi, Krithi Shetty walks away with brownie points as Bebamma.
