Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. is a 2003 comedy-drama film, directed by Raj Kumar Hirani and it was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It stars Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Jimmy Sheirgill, Gracy Singh, Boman Irani and Sunil Dutt and was later followed by a second film Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and it became the first instalment of the Munna Bhai film series.
It was released on 19 December 2003, it was achieved a silver jubilee status being one of only eight films to have achieved this status since the year 2000
At the 2004 Filmfare awards, it won 4 filmfare Awards including the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie, the Filmfare Best Screenplay Award, the Filmfare Best Dialogue Award, and the Filmfare Best Comedian Award and also won number of awards at the 2004 Zee Cine Awards including Best Debuting Director, Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role, Best Cinematography, and Best Dialogue.
Film also won other Awards include The National Film Awards for Best Popular Film and the 2004 International Indian Film Academy Awards where it won the IIFA Best Comedian Award.
Story involves Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt) and his gang are the typical ‘Bhai’s in Mumbai who claims to be a social worker helping out people in recovery through kidnapping and he lied to his father (Sunil Dutt) that he is a doctor. When Sunil Dutt finds out the reality, he is heart-broken and leaves. So now Sanjay Dutt has a point to prove and gets an admission to become a doctor, coincidentally, he joins the same college where his enemy Dr. Asthana (Boman Irani) is a strict Dean. He is also in love with his daughter (Gracy Singh), the story now focuses on how people in the hospital need to be loved and appreciated. A comedy of troubles starts when the ‘cool’ don confronts strict Asthana.
Performance wise-Sanjay Dutt was truly awesome, Arshad Warsi playing the role of Circuit is stupendous. His comic timing was superb. Boman Irani is very good playing the role of Dr Asthana. Jimmy Shergill is also good.Sunil Dutt though he has a very small appearance he touches the heart. Gracy Singh was also pretty and adorable
The music was composed by Anu Malik and the Lyrics for the songs are written by Abbas Tyrewala and Rahat Indori. According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, with around 1,000,000 units sold, this film’s soundtrack album was the year’s fifteenth highest-selling
