Priya ManiPriya Mani plays a contract killer in Boxer Vivek’s Quotation Gang

Even as he’s looking to restart work on his debut project – Arun Vijay’s Boxer – Vivek has finalised his next. Titled Quotation Gang, the film will be a gangster drama, starring Priya Mani in the lead.

Talking about how he roped in the National Award-winning actress for the film, the director says, “When I started writing the script, I was looking for a lively, common face that we all could connect to. The person should be able to pull off a negative character and yet, look innocent. Priya Mani ma’am has been my favoruite since Paruthiveeran and I approached her with the story during the lockdown. I gave her a narration over a video call. She initially felt there was too much violence in the story, but I finally convinced her. It will be a gory, yet realistic gangster film.”

Priya Mani plays a contract killer in the movie. “The film will majorly be set in Dharavi in Mumbai. This is about people who commit crimes and kill people using a nattu thuppaki for as much as Rs 500,” he says.

Interestingly, the title is inspired from a real gang that operates from Kerala. “I wonder why nobody thought of Quotation Gang as a title because there is actually a gang like that. It comprises many girls – middle-class, college-going girls who steal or shoot videos of them seducing someone for a small amount. I also read up a lot about crimes, gangs and what happens to gangsters’ wives after their death. I’ve also explored an LGBT idea in the film,” says Vivek, who intends to shoot the film in Mumbai, Chennai, Andhra Pradesh border and Punjab.

Vivek is planning to go on floors with this film in about three months. “Priya Mani ma’am is doing the Asuran remake and also Maidaan in Hindi. So, we need to work out dates. We’ll do a photoshoot next month,” he says.

So, what’s the status of Boxer? “Boxer is a large-scale film and we need at least 500 members on the set. There are so many departments involved and I didn’t want to risk by starting without planning properly. We are done with 30 per cent of the shoot, but the entire prep is done. We’ll discuss with our producer and Arun Vijay and then figure out when to start the shoot. I’m looking at January or March as of. I actually got in touch with producer Gayathri Suresh after she acquired Boxer’s Hindi remake rights. We wanted to do the film with Vidyut Jammwal, but the pandemic struck and we decided to not work on it now. We decided to do another project in the interim and that’s how Quotation Gang happened. We are now finalising the technicians and the rest of the cast,” he signs off.
