The love drama, directed by Aditya Chopra, is the story of Surinder, an average guy (Shah Rukh Khan) and how he disguises himself as a charming Raj to win over his wife Taani (Anushka Sharma) after the couple finds it difficult to adjust to an arranged marriage. The moral of the story has a sweet message of accepting people as they are without expecting them to change their real selves.
Not just the box office success, but the lead pair’s amazing chemistry and the chartbuster music album composed by Salim and Sulaiman Merchant, were other reasons why this one struck the right chord among movie buffs. Fans had vied for the glamourized version of Shah Rukh, but he seemed more adorable as the silly Surinder.
Anushka, who was only 20 when she made her grand debut, was showered with praise for her confident screen presence, something that she has always admitted, came after a lot of hard work. Such was the film’s popularity that its script was invited to be included in the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, only a day after its release.
