Shahid is a 2013 movie based on the biopic of Shahid Azmi, the film was directed by Hansal Mehta and jointly produced by Anurag Kashyap, UTV Spotboy and Sunil Bohra, The film stars Rajkummar Rao in the titular role; Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Prabhleen Sandhu and Baljinder Kaur appear in supporting roles.
Mehta took a break after some of his films were box-office failures. When he heard about Azmi’s murder, he felt the need to make a film about his life. He began his research for the film nearly three months after Azmi’s murder.
The story was very sensitive as it was based on real life of Late lawyer Shahid Azmi who known for his high acquittal rate specially of terror accused who are falsely implicated in terror cased being poor and helpless, he was gunned down by unknown men in his office on Feb 2010 as he was defending the accused of 26/11 Fahim khan
Shahid runs away from the training camp when he is forced to witness the beheading of a turncoat, is arrested in Delhi, and in Tihar Jail must choose between siding with terrorists again and continuing his former law studies. But he kept hope and continued his studies being in Jail and latter was acquitted by the court after 6 years as there was no evidence found against him.
Mehta was looking for “big stars” for the film, but most were not interested because of his earlier failures. At the time, the film’s co-producer Anurag Kashyap suggested he cast Rajkummar Rao thinking he was perfect for the role of Azmi afterthat
Rao met Azmi’s family and spent time with them to understand the man and his personality. He also studied the Quran and attended courtrooms to understand how lawyers behave
Shahid was made on a production budget of ₹65 lakh (US$91,000) and filmed in complete secrecy, the Film opened to small audiences in theatres and earned a total of ₹45 lakh (US$63,000). It went on ₹2.05 crore (US$290,000) at the end of its first weekend. The film’s total box office collection at the end of its theatrical run was ₹3.607 crore (US$510,000).
