SP Charan recently called a press meet to address rumours surrounding payment of hospital bills of his father, SP Balasubrahmanyam. “We are grieving and without even giving us time to recover, we’ve been inundated with questions every day. There are rumours that we felt the hospital had given us a huge bill, so we spoke to the TN government, asking for relief, and apparently when they didn’t respond fast enough, I spoke to the country’s vice president, whose daughter ultimately settled the bill. Truth is, we’ve been settling the bills in parts during the course of my father’s treatment. Insurance had also covered a portion of the bill. After his demise, I asked one of the doctors if there was any outstanding amount. Our accountant had come with money, too. But the chairman of the hospital had asked them to not charge us anymore and facilitate smooth discharge of my father. I was confused and asked if I could settle the bill later. But they said money was not an issue,” said the actor-singer-producer.
He added, “The government had offered help to our family, but I didn’t have any clarity on the kind of help — if it was financial or any kind of medical help that the hospital required to treat my father. I asked the health secretary if the health minister had given any statement, but he wasn’t aware then and told me he’d get back. I’m sure there are protocols to be followed and the government was very supportive. I’d announced the time of dad’s demise as soon as it happened, and that’s what’s printed in his certificate. Rumours of him passing away much earlier and the hospital not releasing him because of bill settlement issues are not true.”
On reports of Ajith not attending the funeral, he said, “Ajith is a friend; he was my dad’s friend. How does it matter where he pays his respect from? He can grieve at home, it’s not necessary that he has to speak to me.”
