Gavaskar said that since Virat only faced his wife’s bowling during the lockdown, that practice wasn’t enough for him to play to the best of his capability. “Lockdown tha toh sirf Anushka ki bowling ki practice ki unhone, wo video dekhi hai (referring to a video leaked on the web that shows the couple playing cricket on the terrace of their Mumbai home), usse toh kuch nahi hona hai,” he said. This comment was tweaked on social media to “Virat ne lockdown mein toh bass Anushka ki gendon ki practice Ki hai”, which didn’t go down well with people including the actress. Calling it ‘distasteful’, Anushka rightly questioned why she was dragged into cricket and was being attached to her husband’s performance.
She wrote on Instagram (excerpts), “That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife, accusing her for her husband’s game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commenting on the game. Don’t you think you should have equal respect for me and us? It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to make sweeping statements?”
This incident left social media divided in two groups. One who felt it was a distasteful, derogatory and sexist remark by Gavaskar and the other, who thought his comment was tweaked and thus misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. The video is there for all to see. He was clearly referring to the couple’s terrace cricket video, so why the outrage, wondered many.
